This General Assembly, I am working on legislation that will help Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) better utilize their medical skills within their scope of practice. CRNAs are advanced practice nurses that provide anesthesia to patients. Ohio has more than 2,000 CRNAs, and I met with some to talk about the issues they are facing. From this conversation and input from CRNAs, I came up with House Bill 191. Under this bill, CRNAs would be authorized to issue orders for diagnostic tests and drugs to help with pain relief, as well as to direct others to administer drugs in relation to the administration of anesthesia. This bill would also set the period in which CRNAs could make these orders before, during, and after a surgery. This legislation will reduce delays in medication administration and medical treatments that will benefit patients across Ohio.
